We’re coming towards the end of summer in St. Louis. We’ve been to all the festivals. We’ve spent Saturday after Saturday in the park. But the school year is coming. What are we to do? Well, now is a good time to discover some of the indoor treats we conveniently forgot during the warm summer months. Where better to begin than with something cultural.
As you dust off your fall wardrobe we give you some of the most exciting upcoming art exhibitions in St.Louis.
Room With A View at Art St. Louis
September 13 – October 21
Room With A View is a multimedia exhibit features forty-six art works by thirty-six artists. It explores the concept of interiors and exteriors, in both a literal and metaphorical way looking at the physical space they occupy as well as emotional and psychological interpretations of what they represent. This exhibition promises to give visitors a fresh, innovative, look at seemingly familiar scenarios.
Richard Artschwager: Hair, at The Contemporary Art Museum of St.Louis
September 10, 2010 – January 2, 2011
What better way to spend a Saturday afternoon than looking at rubberized horse hair? Well, not really but when said Hair has been sculpted by Pop Art maestro Richard Artschwager, now we’ve got something worth seeing. The exhibition includes hair covered furniture, even exclamation marks and corners as Artschwager explores concepts of perception.
Ahmet Öğüt at Laumeier Sculpture Park
October 23 to January 2, 2011
Turkey-born, Dutch-resident Ahmet Öğüt has done everything from filling a museum with 12 tonnes of coal to flying a boat from the US to Holland to offer visitors to his exhibit a solo sail. He hasn’t revealed what it will be exhibiting at St.Louis’ Laumeier Sculpture Park this fall, but we’re sure it will be worth seeing.
Kelley Johnson, recent paintings at Bruno David Gallery
September 10- November 6
One of St. Louis’ most popular painters artist Kelley Johnson exhibits his latest collection of complex abstract landscapes. This exhibition is a must for local art lovers.
Six at Mad Art Gallery
August 6 – August 31
Six of St.Louis’ finest local artists, Amy Bautz, Deb Douglas, Coby Ellison, Maria Marshall, Carolyn Palmer and Gary Passanise, will be exhibiting on various themes throughout August at Mad Art Gallery.
Gesture, Shape, Combine, Calculate: Postwar Abstraction from The Permanent Collection at The Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum
August 20 – September 20
Gesture, Shape, Combine and Calculate looks at various approaches to abstract painting from the post-war period up until the 1970’s. Artists from the U.S. and Europe are featured such as Alberto Burri, Gene Davis, Roberto Matta, Arshile Gorky and Anne Truitt. The pieces selected are from the museum’s permanent collection.
Homelands at Missouri History Museum
October 16 to January 15
In Homelands: How Women Made The West, Missouri History museum combines art, photography and even artifacts in its exploration of the role of women in shaping Western society. The pivotal role played by women in the home, workforce and as creative forces is developed in the exhibition.
