St. Louis Music Calendar for August

It’s August in St. Louis. Summer is drawing to a close. To console ourselves, let’s listen to some good music. There’s something for everyone this month, from music legends, the return of old favorites to former boy wonders all grown up.
While you try to decide what you want to hear, here’s the month’s music lineup:
Sunday, August 1
Alternative, sometimes Christian, rockers, House of Heroes, play The Firebird. The Ohio boys will be promoting their new album, Suburba.
Monday, August 2
Lyle Lovett takes folk and country and adds something entirely new. Stop by Sheldon Concert Hall to see what we mean. Lovett will be playing from his new album, Natural Forces.
Former Hot Water Music frontman, Chuck Ragan, brings his solo acoustic set to The Firebird.
Tuesday, August 3
When Liturgy plays Cicero’s don’t expect a bible reading but black metal, New York style.
If Celtic, Christian punk, is your thing, check out Flatfoot 56 at Cicero’s. Expect Scottish Highland bagpipes galore and maybe even some kilts.
Wednesday, August 4
If you can’t decide what music to hear, check out Passafire at The Firebird whose multi-faceted sound covers everything from reggae to bluegrass.
The Poison Control Center comes to Cicero’s. Don’t worry we’re referring to indie pop from Iowa.

Thursday, August 5
Deer Tick brings its unique brand of indie folk mixed with blues and grunge to Off Broadway. Lead singer John McCauley will surprise you with a voice like gravel.
Friday, August 6
Take a trip to the year 3000 with Jonas Brothers at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater. Prepare to outrun a hoard of screaming girls and bring your most high-pitched scream with you.
Steve Leslie brings his guitar and his rock to Judy’s Velvet Lounge at River City Casino.
Saturday, August 7
If you like electronica laden with emotion and pathos check out Delta Mirror at The Firebird. The Los Angeles trio will be playing from their new album, Machines That Listen.
You will just smell Kentucky in the air when Cumberland Gap bring their traditional Bluegrass to Broadway Oyster Bar.
Sunday, August 8
It must be the month for family pop sensations in St. Louis. The Hanson Family shows us they’re all grown up now at The Pageant.
Nashville-based singer songwriter, Matthew Perryman Jones, works his magic at Off Broadway. Matthew will be promoting his new EP, The Distance In Between.

Monday, August 9
Up for something different? Try some South Carolina folk rock in the form of Sequoyah Prep School at Cicero’s.
Toronto-based alternative rockers renowned for their electric live performances, The Clicks, play Cicero’s.
Tuesday, August 10
Why don’t you stay just a little bit longer? Legendary singer-songwriter, Jackson Browne, stops by The Fabulous Fox.
Are you drawn to The Son of a Bad Man? Then drop by The Firebird to see the Florida rockers do their thing.
Wednesday, August 11
Yes, it’s punk. Yes, it’s hardcore. The Biters play The Firebird. They say they’re the classic punk band at the high school prom.
Blues wizard, Tab Benoit, works his magic at Broadway Oyster Bar. Expect a mixture of elegant blues styles from Chicago to swamp.
Thursday, August 12
Grand Ole Opry favorite, Elizabeth Cook brings her part folk, part country sound to Off Broadway.
Double Grammy award, Academy Award winning rock singer-songwriter, Melissa Etheridge comes to Roberts Orpheum Theater.
Friday, August 13
21st century wandering troubadours, The Wiyos, play Off Brodway. Expect quality musicianship from the quartet and vaudevillian stage behavior.
Do you like guitars? Do you like guitars and saxes together? If you’ve answered yes on both accounts check out The Guitars and Saxes Consortium at The Pageant as part of St. Louis’ Smooth Jazz Summer Sounds series. Popular jazz performers Gerard Albright, Jeff Golub, Peter White, Kirk Whallum will appear on the night.
Saturday, August 14
Hip hop trendsetters of the moment, The Black Eyed Peas, play Scottrade Center. Support is provided by Grammy-nominated electro hop act, LMFAO.
Fans of former South Carolina based rock band, Sunbrain, will be familiar with its ex lead singer David Dondero. Dondero plays his solo material at Off Broadway.

Sunday, August 15
There’s nothing wrong with some pop punk once in a while. Check out Veara at The Firebird.
The single boys of St. Louis might want to get themselves along to Cicero’s where all girl indie pop band, Vanity Theft, take to the stage.
Monday, August 16
St. Louis Scene’s editor has many fond memories of listening to Cypress Hill in college. He wouldn’t say any more than that. Catch them live in St. Louis at The Pageant.
The Turbo A.C.s call themselves the world’s foremost Greaserpunk band. See what they mean by that at The Firebird.
Tuesday, August 17
You’re guaranteed an intense, acoustic set with William Fitzsimmons at The Firebird. The question remains…is he really as odd as he says he is?
Check out hammered dulcimer wizard, Rick Thum, at The Sheldon Concert Hall, for a new musical experience.

Wednesday, August 18
For some alternative rock from Pennsylvania, see Pilot Cloud at Cicero’s. The boys are scaling back their live performances, so take the opportunity to catch them now while you can.
Former leader of punk band, Black Flag, Greg Ginn takes to the stage at The Firebird. Ginn was on Rolling Stones’ top 100 guitarists of all time.

Pop comes to Cicero’s with True Womanhood. We’re sure guys are welcome too.
Fancy some bluesy rock or rock blues? Swedish-born Anders Osborne plays Broadway Oyster Bar.
Friday, August 20
Smooth jazz sounds take over The Pageant with Euge Groove and Andre Delano.
Looking for the feel good factor? Put some funky reggae in your diet with JoBu at Broadway Oyster Bar.
Saturday, August 21
Former Acid Band frontman, Dax Riggs, showcases some new, solo, material at The Old Rock House.
We’re still wondering who Ava is. Find out at Cicero’s when progressive rockers, Ava,Wait, take to the stage.
Sunday, August 22
Something indie? Something new? O’Brother takes to the stage at The Firebird.
Rush brings rock in its progressive form to Verizon Wireless Amphitheater.
Monday, August 23
New York rockers, Coheed and Cambria, play The Pageant. The band is currently promoting its new album Year Of The Black Rainbow.
It might be 500 miles to Memphis but it seems nearer when the cowpunk specialists of the same name take to the stage at Off Broadway.
Tuesday, August 24
If you like some trance and fancy your back beats stop by The Blue Note because The Glitch Mob is just what Tuesday night is lacking.
Wednesday, August 25
Practice your scream and prepare to out run the screaming girls once again this month. The American Idols 2010 tour comes to Scottrade Center.
Do you like a rich, folk, sound with a lot of people on stage. Then check out the eight person River City Extension at The Firebird.

Treat yourself to some quality blues with Brian Curran at Broadway Oyster Bar.
Tonight the beautiful people should stay at home. The Ugly Radio Rebellion are taking over Off Broadway and probably St. Louis as well.

They need no introduction. The Black Crowes play The Pageant in what could just well be the gig of the month for St. Louis’ rock & roll fans.
Papa Grows Funk at Broadway Oyster Bar. Just don’t ask what funk he grows.

The Father of Funk, George Clinton, takes to the stage at Chaifetz Arena.
Sunday, August 29
Everyone should have some alternative country in their month. Drag The River at The Firebird could just be your dose for August.
Tuesday, August 31
If the name is anything to go by, this could be one of the tickets of the month. Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltzin brings their indie pop to The Firebird.
